MENTAL HEALTH: FACTS AND SELF HELP METHODS

Mental Health

Facts collected from: The Economic Times

As indicated by an estimate by the World Health Organization (WHO), mental illness makes about 15% of the complete infection over the world. A similar estimate recommends that India has perhaps the biggest populace influenced from mental illness. Subsequently, WHO has named India as the world’s ‘most depressing nation’.

Additionally, between 1990 to 2017, one out of seven individuals from India has experienced mental illness running from depression, tension, and anxiety to other serious conditions. It won’t be distorted to say that the nation is under a mental epidemic.

The primary reason behind India to lose its mental well-being is the absence of awareness and emotional context about the issue. There is a major disgrace around individuals experiencing any sort of mental health issues. They are frequently labelled as ‘insane people’ by the society. This prompts to an endless loop of shame, suffering and segregation of the patients. Additionally, there is a lack of mental human services workforce in India. According to WHO, in 2011, there were 0.301 psychologists and 0.047 psychologists for each 100,000 patients experiencing a mental health issue in India. These issues disturb the size of the issue and need quick redressal.

We need to educate that like every other physical illness, mental illness is normal. It’s not a ‘mentality’, ‘insanity’, or ‘psychic disbalance’. It’s an illness which can be treated through self-help methods. No doubt, medications can do miracles.

SELF HELP METHODS:

  • Living with mental illness is it easy. So, if you’re in contact with a person having mental illness; be patient while dealing with him/her. Build reliable and consistent relationships with them.
  • As an individual, every individual should nourish their social life. No one can exist solely. It’s just a saying which is applicable in rare instances. You’ll always need people to listen to what you’re feeling. The conversations will make you feel wanted, positive and valued.
  • Practise deep breathing, exercising, meditation, and yoga. This helps you to focus to live in present and peacefully accept the past. Believe and let the depth of your soul, heart and mind free from any burdens.
  • Opposite-to-Emotion Thinking: It’s a technique where you act opposite to what your emotions tell you do. For example, if your emotions are making you sink and depressed, try genuine efforts to do the things which will make you happy.
  • Five Senses: It’s a technique where you use your five senses to bring you back to reality. For example, look what is around you; listen to some soothing music; feel the chair beneath you; feel the fragrance of your perfume; eat chocolates.
  • Search for positivity. Reframe your negative thoughts and focus on the positives. Instead of thinking what will happen next; think that this is the worst that can happen and I can easily move over this. There are SOLUTIONS.
